Building a Sandcastle

  1. Gather tools
    1. Small bucket (.5 to 1 gallon capacity)
    2. Small Shovel (4 to 6 square inch face surface area)
  2. Travel to beach on a nice day
  3. Chose location on beach
    1. Identify the distance waves are traveling up the beach
    2. Select a location in moist sand several feet higher than wherever the waves are reaching
  4. Prepare location
    1. Use hands, shovel, and bucket to take sand from areas immediately adjacent to location
    2. Pile sand at selected location to approximately knee height
    3. Pack sand in pile tightly
    4. Retrieve water and add to pile of sand if sand will not pack
    5. Use shovel to shape the sand pile into a roughly cubic shape with each side at least as long as twice your bucket opening diameter, add more sand and water and pack as needed until size and shape achieved
  5. Add towers
    1. Pack wet sand into bucket
    2. Place hand over open face of bucket
    3. Tip bucket up-side-down
    4. Place back of hand covering face of bucket on top of the cube shaped sand pile near one of the corners
    5. Slide hand away and allow inverted bucket to rest face down on top surface of cube
    6. Gently tap bottom and sides of bucket
    7. Gently lift bucket
    8. If sand remains in bucket, repeat taping and lift again until sand remains in shape of bucket on top of cube
    9. Repeat from step cccc at all four corners of the square that is the top surface of the cube
  6. Add decorative element (door)
    1. Select location in bottom center of cube face facing ocean
    2. Insert finger .25" into sand on face and trace the outline of a small door
    3. Clean up sand debris created by tracing door
  7. Dig a moat 
    1. Use hands and shovel to dig a trench that is 6 inches wide and 6 inches deep
    2. Extend trench in a circle all the way around your castle
